A Century of Women Writers

‘Goodnight stars
Good night air
Good night ….’

Can you finish this? If not outright, is the ending just out of reach in the recesses of your memory?

These words come to us from one of the best-selling books ever: ‘Goodnight Moon’, the 1942 rhyming children’s book by Margaret Wise Brown. Wise Brown – who was born 1910 in Brooklyn and passed too young in 1952 – wrote a long list of children’s books that includes The Runaway Bunny, The Little Island, and Big Red Barn.

Margaret Wise Brown is one of the authors whose portrait and story is featured in Her Story: A Century of Women Writers. Scheduled to run until January 23, 2022, the exhibit is on at The National Portrait Gallery in the Washington DC Smithsonian. You can also see the portraits and read about these 24 remarkable authors online.
