Dominique Vincenz @ The Artisan Market

i. Name: Dominique Vincenz

ii. I am a photographer

iii. What I love about this work is that it takes me out of my own head and into nature which, naturally, brings me back ‘home’ to a more grateful and grounded person. Stopping to literally ‘smell the roses’ slows me down and invites me to pay attention to what is good in the world.

I particularly enjoy taking close-ups of flowers and marveling at their intricacy. Perhaps it somehow transports me to my  early childhood in my grandparents garden in England where, I swear, faeries lived!

iv. The name and date of the market I’ll be in next is: The Artisan Market at 1708 W. 16th Avenue on September 17th

v. In the overall market, you’ll see: handmade and homegrown items as well as experience musicians and original art.

vi. In describing my work in the market, I’d say:
I will be selling a variety of different greeting cards featuring photographs that I have taken over the past few months as well as a select group of framed prints.

vii. 1 or 2 of my pieces from the show I can say a few words about are:
This summer I had an opportunity to experience a real prairie storm. I was sitting in the back seat of a car where the window would only go halfway down, driving on the outskirts of the city of Lethbridge, yelping with glee! I was really not expecting to be able to capture the storm but was overjoyed to see the finished product truly was what I saw that night! When I look at the photographs it is easy to relive the energy of that powerful storm.

viii. One thing I learned about myself in creating these pieces is:
It is not only these pieces that teach me specifically but, more so the entire practice of wandering and being open to seeing what is right in front of me that teaches me to be present to each moment and open to possibilities. If I wait to consider whether or not I should take a picture, sometimes it’s just gone…

ix. After this market, I’m looking forward to wandering and waiting for images that are calling to be seen and photographed. I hope to continue to share my love of nature with others.

x. Anything to add:
Simply put, taking photographs of nature makes me happy! It is a kind of medicine for me in a world that sometimes feels unsettled. Mother Nature always has a way of changing my perspective and I am so grateful to her every time she reveals something new and miraculous!
