Jehna @ Hilary Miles Flowers

i. I work as a Florist /owner operator of my own shop.
.
ii. I do this creative work because:
I do this creative work because I could never see myself working in an office situation, never wanted to work for a big company with hundreds of employees and could never sit down. I always knew I was a creative person and liked to work hard and problem solve from a very young age. Initially I thought I would go down the road of something like graphic design, or interior design or even fine art. I feel like working with flowers is an amalgamation of all the things I was looking for but honestly, never never thought of it as a career early on.
.
iii. A “typical” day for me in the pandemic involves:
The short answer is that running a business like this during a pandemic is anything but typical. In a ” regular” year, I can use past knowledge to order for things like Mother’s day, Valentine’s day and even think about needing extra staff for weddings. 2020 threw that all out the window. Who knew that 2020 mothers day was going to be the busiest I’ve ever seen, I would have never been able to predict something like that based on the fact that 2 months before, ALL my corporate accounts cancelled and I thought my world was crashing before me. So, what I have had to do is be frugal when I need to, be okay with selling out, and put one foot in front of the other and take it as it comes. My day to day hasn’t changed too much, I still get up early on Mondays to buy special product for my clients, I still do everything I did before really. The floral industry has done okay during this pandemic; flowers make people happy.

.
iv. Personal qualities that help me in my work are:
-confident but not cocky
-willingness to learn and apply constructive criticism
-problem solving. I always joke and say florists are the best problem solvers on earth. We are constantly being tested in strange situations with a perishable product
-driven
.
v. Creative childhood hobbies:
I have always been artistic, drawing, painting, building. I have also ridden and taken care of horses since I was 10 years old. And boy do you learn a lot when you have to take care of 30 horses basically by yourself, you just figure it out, no one tells you what to do. It’s a serious game of trial and error
.
vi. Show, podcast, books that I’m into right now:
I love me some murder podcsts like ” Morbid”
RuPauls drag race is slaying me right now, great for a giggle. As well as This is Us
And right now I’m reading Three Women by Lisa Taddeo. It covers the sexual and emotional lives of three women from different backgrounds across the U.S.
.
.
vii. Training that has helped me in this career:
Basically you have to be willing to learn and just get in and start. The best way to learn about anything fully is to start and immerse yourself in it.
.
viii. A common trap that can hurt people in this career:
You have to have a sense of humor, not take things too personally and don’t always go with the trends.
.
ix. Some proud career moments:
There are so many! After doing this career for over 14 years I have many. But I loved doing the flowers for the IOC at the Vancouver Club in 2010 for the Olympic Club. So many gorgeous pieces were made during the weeks of the Olympics, I’m surprised I still have hands left. Another would be doing the flowers for Hilary’s Celebration of Life. I know it sounds odd… but it was truly an honour to do the service flowers for such a great and iconic florist whom I looked up to. Our culture is strange about death; funeral flowers are just as important if not MORE important than other occasions. I was very proud to be a part of that moment.
.
.
x. Upcoming shows or special events:
Nothing planned at the moment but we do have some interesting ordering options and possible 30th HMF anniversary function in the works for 2022
.
xi. If you want to work in my field I suggest that you:
Maybe just go out and buy flowers and start playing with them. Volunteer at a local florist and just start.
.
xii. A professional goal I have for myself in the future:
I would love to maybe open a second location.
