i. I work as a Visual artist, working primarily oil paintings and illustration.
ii. I do this creative work because:
It has always been my passion, and nothing else brings me the amount of joy and peace that creating art does!
iii. A ‘typical’ day for me in the pandemic involves:
I start my day with an iced coffee at home as soon as I wake up, which I like to enjoy while doing about 30 minutes to an hours worth of social media “work”. After doing a quick home workout, showering and having something to eat, I always get working in my home studio!
This year I have been extremely blessed with a steady stream of commissions, so I’ll usually do a few hours of those and then I’ll try to work on my own personal pieces. I have a part time job in the evenings, but when I’m not working my other job I will dedicate my evenings to online work for my website, or some more social media.

iv. Personal qualities that help me in my work are:
I love routine, I am very organized and I get almost obsessive about things that I love, so I would say that these qualities help me stay consistent in my daily work routine.
v. The greatest challenges around doing this work are:
Coming up with new ideas, which gets very discouraging because I think artists always feel like they need to have a constant steam of fresh ideas!
Staying confident in yourself, because it is so easy to start beating yourself up and thinking you / your work is not good enough. It happens so often, but I’m learning how to control those emotions that take over.
Business wise, the biggest challenge is to make sales! It’s very hard to gain exposure and get consistent sales, because this business is so fickle, so it takes a tremendous amount of work.
vi. Creative childhood hobbies:
I have always been an artistic person, so arts and crafts have always been a hobbies of mine. I also really loved cooking (I thought I would become a chef!) as well as photography.
vii. Show, podcasts, books that I’m into right now:
I’m currently very into:
• The Artist Business Plan Podcast, hosted by the guys who founded Superfine Art fair.
• The Jealous Curator podcast
• New Girl TV show (When I’m unwinding 🙂 )
• Any small business related YouTube channels because they are very helpful to watch!
viii. Training that has helped me in this career:
I am a self taught artist, and I only did a year of college before deciding it wasn’t for me. My biggest training has come from my entrepreneur Mother who has owned a restaurant and cafe for over 10 years. She has really helped me navigate through the business world and customer client relations.
ix. A common trap that can hurt people in this career:
Being told that your work is not good enough, or that people don’t like your work. Not everyone is going to like everything and that’s okay! It’s easy to just give up because of that one person who tells you something negative, but I promise if you keep working and doing what you love, people will notice and feel this in your work. It takes time and strength! I still get hurt by this all the time, but it gets easier.

xi. Upcoming shows or events include:
Currently, I have nothing planned yet due to Covid, but I’m looking forward to figuring that part out!
xii. If you want to work in my field, I suggest that you:
Just do it! Stop waiting for the right moment or putting it off… just start creating and putting out into the world. The rest will come.
