Kimura Parker + Ax
Jon Kimura Parker – or ‘Jackie’ as he was known – grew up in Vancouver, studying piano with his uncle Edward Parker, mother Keiko Parker and Lee Kum Sing at the Vancouver Academy of Music and UBC. Parker was a fearsome presence at the Kiwanis Festival, sweeping gold with his brilliant technique and engaging musicianship. He went on to study with Adele Marcus at Juilliard, more gold medals at international piano competitions and an exciting career performing around the world and teaching piano at Rice University in Houston.
An Officer of the Order of Canada, Parker is known for his versatility, moving from classical performance for Queen Elizabeth II to collaborations with the Miró Quartet and jam sessions with Audra McDonald and Bobby McFerrin.
Tomorrow at 5 pm Pacific, Kimura Parker and world-renowned pianist Emmanuel Ax are giving an online concert to raise funds for classical musicians whose concerts – and paycheques – have been scrubbed by covid. They will be joined by mezzo-soprano J’Nai Bridges, violinist Rachel Barton Pine, clarinetist Anthony McGill and harpist Bridget Kibbey.
Audience contributions begin at $5 and will go to the Artists Relief Tree. To learn more and purchase tickets, see:
