The Levain Cookie
In such a huge city with so many dining options, it is surprising that certain wee places manage to gain notoriety. Levain Bakery – on West 74th Street in the Upper Westside – has built a citywide reputation that far outweighs its tiny location below sidewalk level. This bakery is so popular, they actually have a live Levain Cam on their website, so you can check out the lines.
The Bakery was started by competitive athlete friends, Connie McDonald and Pam Weekes, who were looking for the ‘world’s greatest chocolate chip cookie’ to satisfy them after an Ironman-level workout. They started their business in 1994 and have now become a destination.
Their six-ounce cookies are gooey-tear flavour goodness. We tried the Dark Chocolate Chip, Oatmeal Raisin and Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Chip. No surprise that Levain has won all sorts of ‘Best Cookie in New York’ awards. Right now, they have a 9.6/10 rating on Foursquare after 2,020 votes. Well worth the visit; come hungry.
