Misty Copeland Drops Into Degas

Photographers, and spouses, Deborah Ory and Ken Browar are known for their striking portraits of dancers. Ory was a dance major in college who, after injuring herself in first year, started photographing the rehearsals she would have otherwise been in.

Browar developed his reputation as a top fashion photographer with images in magazines from Vogue to Elle. He got serious about photographing dancers when he was living in Paris and training his camera on the Paris Opera Ballet.

“For us,” Ory and Browar say in an interview with Holden Luntz Gallery, “it’s really about capturing the emotion the dancers express through their body. We don’t want to show tricks necessarily. Sometimes the movements are really simple and really subtle; it could just be a beautiful arm gesture or a beautiful breadth that their doing. But really we want to capture emotion through motion. I think that’s the message. It’s that they have to have some passion and power in the images.”

Ory and Browar have done stunning work with dancers from Alvin Ailey to ABT, The Royal Ballet, Martha Graham Dance Company. Right now, some of this work is on display in Power, Passion & Pose – an exhibit at the Hunter Museum of American Art.

Included are the incredible images of ABT Principal Ballerina, Misty Copeland, inserted into Degas’ paintings of ballerinas hard at work. “Doing the Degas series was so magical,” says Misty Copeland. “More so afterwards looking at it. I could not believe how stunning they turned out. Like a Degas piece, they are timeless, these photos.”
