Punjabi Market Walking Tour

On June 7th, the 2021 Indian Summer Festival begins. Now in its 11th year, the roster of events includes a Self-Guided Punjabi Market Walking Tour. To learn more about this intriguing event, we spoke to Jag Nagra, whose many roles at the festival include being named 2021 ISF Feature Artist.

i. Name: Jag Nagra, Creative Director of the Punjabi Market Regeneration Collective

ii. Can you tell us a little about the Self-Guided Punjabi Market Walking Tour:
Indian Summer Festival is partnering with Punjabi Market Regeneration Collective (PMRC) to create an immersive self-guided walking tour that touches all the five senses. Visitors will be able to put on their headphones and take a narrated walk through the streets of Punjabi Market to learn about the rich history of the neighbourhood.  Guest speakers on the audio tour will include business owners and community members.

On the tour, you’ll hear stories from the pioneers of Punjabi Market and Musqueam Artist Debra Sparrow speaking about the collaboration that she was a part of; her artwork can be seen on the street pole banners in the market. You’ll hear stories about businesses that have been in the market for eons, a Feminist march that took place in Punjabi Market, the history of the Khalsa Diwan Society and the Vaisakhi Nagar Kirtan that passes through the market each year. You’ll see an art installation called ‘Marigolds in the Market.’ We’re hoping to introduce (or re-introduce) the market and the businesses to the community through the walking tour. We want people to come, get acquainted to Punjabi Market’s history and visit the shops in the market.

iii. What’s the Punjabi Market Premium Gift Box?
The Punjabi Market Premium Gift Box contains a specially curated selection of items from vendors in Punjabi Market. The box curators are artists Mustaali Raj & Minahil Bukhari (ISF 2020 Feature Artists) and myself (Jag Nagra, ISF 2021 Feature Artist). Touching on the five senses, you’ll be able to experience incense, chai, brassware, snacks, and custom-made face masks featuring a beautiful patterned fabric. Very limited quantities of the box are available for individual purchase.

At the cost of $125, including taxes and shipping, the gift box will be delivered to your door via Canada Post to Canadian addresses only. Available for order here: https://www.goelevent.com/IndianSummer/e/PunjabiMarketBox

If you buy the ISF2021 Premium Pass, the box is included.

iv. Anything to add:
The Punjabi Market Regeneration Collective is a group of passionate advocates, artists, students and entrepreneurs who are working towards revitalizing Vancouver’s historic Punjabi Market by beautifying the market, developing and promoting businesses and creating a hub for arts and culture.

Punjabi Market was the very first of its kind in all of North America, founded in 1970 and over the last few decades, there hasn’t been a lot of investment in the neighbourhood. The PMRC is working hard to preserve its history and is looking ahead to help shape the next 50 years.

Visitors can stream or download the tour from July 3 to July 17; more information is available on Indian Summer Fest 2021
