i. I work as:
A Creative director and principal of my eponymous interior design firm, Robert Bailey Interiors.
ii. I do this creative work because:
I’ve had a lucky life being able to do the work of my choice.
iii. Personal qualities that help me in my work are:
Being an optimist is pretty critical to a designer and the ability to always see a way forward. But likely the most relevant qualities are empathy and being a good observer and listener.
iv. The greatest challenges around doing this work are time and budget.
v. Creative childhood hobbies:
Playing with dolls, lego, drawing and painting …. all padded heavily with lots of dreaming.
vi. Other creators who inspire you:
This is a very long list, because I’m inspired daily by creatives in all fields. Art, fashion, architecture, design, film ….. etc. But more often than not, it is art that stops me in my tracks. Artists like Constantin Brancusi do not fail to leave me in awe.
vii. Training that has helped me succeed in this career:
Early values demonstrated by my mother, of working hard + perseverance are critical. A good education in learning to be a learner (for life) and extensive experience working and collaborating with a diverse cross section of design professionals.
viii. The biggest myth about this type of work is:
That it’s all about pretty pictures. Don’t get me wrong, we like pretty pictures but design is a very serious business. Responding to a client’s program with functionality and problem solving are the main priorities; beauty is the result of getting those right.
ix. Some proud career moments:
I appreciate all the recognizable milestones such as awards, editorials, etc. But the most satisfying times are when clients are happy and appreciative with the work we’ve done for them.
x. If you want to work in my field, I suggest that you:
Get the best education you can, work hard and stay engaged. In recent years, the interior design profession has become a much more popular pursuit, and hence is somewhat over served with start ups. If your end game is a firm of your own, seek out the best and the brightest to work with, do your time to grow your professional knowledge and become a registered interior designer.
xi. A professional goal I have for the future:
My professional goal is to continue enjoying everyday, doing good work with good people.

Our instagram feed keeps up with our new work and highlights some of our favourites from the past 13 years . Our web site is in need of updating ( but has a good cross section of our work ) and hopefully we’ll find the time this year to have our on line presence revamped; stay tuned.
