i. I work as an… artist

ii. I do this creative work because… it makes me the happiest.

iii. Personal qualities that help me in my work are… passion and imagination. I allow my sense of adventure and curiosity drive my practice and everyday life. I am a carefree rule breaker, experimenting with media. In contrast, I am also a disciplined rule follower, intrigued by art history and theory. I value patience, persistence, self criticism, and deeper meaning.

iv. The greatest challenges around doing this work are… separating work from life.

v. Creative childhood hobbies included a lot of drawing. I liked to draw people and then I’d create elaborate backgrounds about each character. I’d draw maps of the towns that these characters lived in, and blueprints of each of their houses. I loved building towns or homes, creating lego houses with multiple rooms, or entire villages in our oversized sandbox.

vi. Other creators who inspire you. At the top of my list are my Dad and my Gramma Rose. From a young age I’d see them using their own imaginations and skills to create.

vii. Training that has helped me succeed in this career … I went to school for Visual Art, receiving my BFA from UVic. This program was instrumental in establishing my aesthetic taste.

viii. The biggest myth about this type of work is… I had to google “myths about artists”, and the one that resonated with me the most was that Artists can only truly make it in New York. I’m challenging this one because I don’t live in New York and never hope to (although it’s a fabulous city to visit). There are so many great art centers other that NYC, and art is becoming more and more accessible. Thank you internet.

ix. If you want to work in my field, I suggest that you…  I’d recommend just practicing and experimenting. My studio practice is a learned skill.

x. A professional goal I have for the future … My goals aren’t so much milestones as they are projects in my head that I want to create. I have a drawing series that I want to spend time on, and I’d love to spend some time working with sculpture.
