Serena Chu @ The Crawl
i. Name: Serena Chu
ii. I am a pottery teacher, ceramic and mural artist.
iii. My Eastside Culture Crawl dates + location:
My studio is located at 1630 Pandora Street and will be open Nov 17-18 from 5pm-10pm and Nov 19-20 from 11am-6pm.
.
.
iv. The type of work I’ll be showing in the Crawl is:
I will be showcasing my contemporary Geometric Mountain, Japanese Wagara ceramics and ornaments. There will be a large collaborative life-size colouring mural that celebrates diversity and art that visitors can come and help colouring in! Original illustrations on greeting cards, colouring books and stickers will also be on display beside the mural.
v. I particularly enjoy being part of the Crawl because:
The crawl unites the general public with artists of Vancouver. They get an inside look on how we operate our creative business and we get to share our love of art with them.
.
.
vi. Something I learned about myself in creating this work is:
I specialized in mural painting in university and I still love larger than life art work. It’s been a pleasure working with clients to bring happiness to their event and witnessing the joy it brings to their guests. On the ceramics side, I love that the medium gives you boundless opportunities to create objects and explore techniques that are used in other mediums. Turns out that a large part of my passion is being able to take an idea and making it come to life.
vii. One highlight of my career from over the last few years has been:
The highlight of my career is discovering my love for teaching and connecting people. I pivoted my business model to focus more on community building and it has been so rewarding being able to pass on skills to others and create a positive and fun atmosphere for them.
I have a huge desire to evoke a sense of belonging for my students by encouraging a supportive space, story-telling and laughing. My life-size colouring book murals attract so many smiles from all walks of life that’s it’s hard not to be happy while colouring in together. Adults turn into kids again and it is a joy to see so many happy faces around because of my artwork.

.
After this show, I’m looking forward to:
I’m looking forward to seeing familiar faces join my pottery and art workshops and associating my studio and practice with happy energy.
