Sheku + Isata Kanneh-Mason
You might remember his beautiful playing from the wedding of the now Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry.
20 year old cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason – winner of the 2016 BBC Young Musician Competition and one of seven gifted, musical siblings – saw his 2018 debut recording Inspiration reach Number One on the classical charts.
Sheku and one of his talented sisters, Isata – recipient of the Elton John scholarship through her studies at the Royal Academy of Music – will be performing this Sunday afternoon in a Vancouver Recital Society concert at the Orpheum.
On their program:
BEETHOVEN: Variations in F major, Op. 66
BARBER: Sonata for Cello and Piano, Op. 6
RACHMANINOV: Sonata for Piano and Cello, Op. 19
“When I’m on the train,” Sheku said in a Strad Magazine interview, “I like to listen to music or look at the score and analyse what’s going on. If you listen to a piece of music and follow the score, you’ll notice different things, because you’re not thinking about actually playing. Just thinking about what it would feel like to play something can help to make sure that your brain is as involved with the music as your body.”
What a wonderful opportunity to catch this talented duo still early in their musical lives.
