Sonya Marie-Pierre Labrie @ First Pick

i. Your Name: Sonya Marie-Pierre Labrie, creator of SML Glassworks

ii. I am a: Glass artist /Glassblower, designer, and instructor

iii. Show dates + location: Upcoming show, will be First Pick Handmade, Dec 10-11 at Heritage Hall, 3102 Main Street in Vancouver hours are 11m-6pm daily.

iv. The type of work I’ll be showing here are:
I’ll be showing and selling function glassware, including drinking glasses, vases, terrariums, and dishes. All the work is individually handmade in either blown or sculpted hot glass. Show favorites are my Colour POP Cups as well as my Geometric Terrariums.

v. I particularly enjoy being part of the Show because:
This show is one of my favorites! The quality and variety of work curated for the show are incredible. The show promotes handmade and slow fashion by creating intimate venues for Independent Canadian Designers to sell their work as they envision it.

vi. Something I learned about myself in creating this work is:
I learned to take risks and trust myself, new ideas come when you least expect them. Glass also forces you to be flexible (physically and mentally) and adaptable to changes; in a sense “going with the flow”. It requires you to be centered and in one place, in the present, a meditation in motion.

vii. One highlight of my career over the last few years has been:
I had a large part in developing Terminal City Glass Co-op, the co-operative studio at which is where I make most of my work. I have been a key contributor to educational curriculum development and am deeply involved in community-building practices, as well as being one of the instructors in several disciplines of glass.

viii. After this show, I’m looking forward to:
RELAXING! This will be my last in-person show for this busy 2022 season. I’m looking forward to kitty cuddles and a cabin retreat with my love.
