Splash Pendulum

Arts Umbrella has always been a vibrant meeting place for talented BC artists. When artist Carol Henriquez and dancer Gloria Schwartz opened this not-for-profit arts education centre in 1979, they were determined to engage its young students in high quality arts classes. “No macaroni, no string,” said Henriquez.

Sure enough, many of the city’s most accomplished artists have come down to Granville Island to teach or guest in classes. Year after year, an even greater swath of the city’s artists mobilize for Arts Umbrella’s Splash art auction and gala. This remarkable collection of artists donate their works to raise funds. Through efforts like these, more than 12,000 young people can attend Arts Umbrella for little or no cost.

Gordon Smith is one prominent artist who has remained committed to Arts Umbrella over the years. At the age of 97, he is still experimenting with new forms and has created a wonderful mixed media piece for this year’s Splash.

The Splash live and silent auctions of over 100 pieces will take place October 15th at Performance Works on Granville Island. But, you can visit the art for free at the Pendulum Gallery – 885 West Georgia Street – from September 19th to 30th. The Pendulum Gallery is itself an interesting space, featuring Broken Column, Alan Storey’s giant kinetic sculpture that swings overhead.
