Tales By Don Mowatt

If you’re looking for a unique virtual performance featuring a collection of talented Vancouverites, check out Encounters: Stories & Music with Don Mowatt on Thursday, December 10th.

As Mowatt explains: ‘While working as a radio documentary producer for thirty five years at the CBC and before, I was privileged to meet two queens, two kings, famous writers, actors, musicians, theologians, politicians and a lot of nameless characters. Encounters is based on true tales of a bear, a family of skunks, ghosts, Haida artist Bill Reid who was born one hundred years ago, a famous theatrical artist in Paris and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor.’

It’s an event that features violinist Domagoj Ivanovic,  pianist Noel McRobbie and music by Michael Conway Baker.

“Michael Conway Baker is also presenting alongside me a series of four musical portraits for violin and piano which will be interspersed before, between and following my three autobiographical tales,” Mowatt tells us. “Michael and I have been friends and colleagues since university days in the 1960s and I broadcast many of his first compositions on CBC radio. He has since gone on to a remarkable career, composing award winning scores for television, feature films, the Ice Capades, The National Ballet and the concert stage.”
.
“Of course it is very difficult to perform during this pandemic and to see live musical and theatrical productions anywhere in the world,” Mowatt continues. “Fortunately the administration at West Vancouver’s Silk Purse Art Centre has gone into virtual production with many of its regular artists and this will make accessible to people in the safety of their homes our shows. This will be available now not only to our regular audiences but to our friends and family on the Internet all over the world. People in England and Denmark for example have already registered for this production in December.”
