Thanksgiving Studio Tour
The Fairy Hogmother can be proud of her birthplace. For the twentieth year, the artists of Gabriola are showing off their skills in the island’s Thanksgiving Studio Tour.
Day One boasted heavy rain, yet visitors and locals were turning up in enthusiastic packs to meet artists in their work spaces and to see their latest creations. The art-curious followed the Gabriola Arts Council map from studio to studio.
The tour includes artists we have featured in past profiles. At location #54 is Dianna Bonder, The Fairy Hogmother’s creator, painter and children’s book illustrator. It was Dianna Bonder whom we commissioned to create Beatrix Shuttleworth, our travel logo for the magazine. Beatrix has the last word in our article today.
At location #28 is ceramic artist Paige Coull and her Black Bird Studios.
At location #46 is designer and silversmith Nina Turczyn of Paprika Jewellery.
The Thanksgiving Studio Tour also gives everyone a chance to discover artists they don’t yet know. At location #4 – the Casa Blanca Gallery – we were happy to explore the work of Marylyn Beaubien.
Beaubien is a prolific artist who weaves and molds baskets, paints in watercolour and writes. As visitors streamed in and out, Beaubien was in the kitchen chatting and showing us how her baskets take shape.

Here is the official list of all the artists involved. If you are nowhere near the island this weekend, you can still check out the artists general studio hours and website offerings.
